Selfridges Ocean Project: “Washed Up” Fashion Exhibition from Rhonesha Byng on Vimeo.

Walking down Oxford circus it was hard to miss the elaborate display of gorgeous couture fashion pieces amongst an elaborate display of coral shells. We didn’t know what we had stumbled upon but we were intrigued enough to go inside.
What we found was the “Washed Up” fashion exhibition, part of SelfRidges Project Ocean. The exhibition ended on June 12th and I stumbled upon it just a few days before they packed it up. The project was curated by Judith Clark and is part of a retail activist initiative to highlight the impact of over-fishing on the environment.
The exhibit showcases 26 couture pieces with an ocean theme by designers including Philip Treacy, Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, Iris Van Herpen and Hussein Chalayan. The most buzzed about pieces include Huseein Chalayan’s bubble dress, which is in the main display window and is the dress that drew us in initially, and Philip Treacy’s lobster hat worn by Lady Gaga. Another notable featured also includes Alexander McQueens’s iconic Plato Atlantis dress and Gareth Pugh’s Fishscale dress seen on Beyonce in the Run The World video.
This specific exhibition has closed but there are still other exhibits throughout the store part of Project Ocean and you can donate to their cause HERE.
