The 2009 Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival

Through the rain, a little over 1,000 hip hop lovers came out to the fifth annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival.  Performers included classic rap acts and some perhaps soon to be classic acts from Dead Prez, Styles P and Pharoh Monch to Grand Puba, Smif-N-Wessun, Marco Polo and Torae, and Donny Goines.
The grass-roots run festival doesn’t charge for tickets but accepts “donations” of about ten dollars.  It’s usually a good day in the park with your friends along with some good music.  But this year I left early, I didn’t catch the headliners and didn’t do any interviews. If you are a dedicated hip hop head or were born before 1985 you would have loved this year’s festival, but for me, it just didn’t do it.
I did enjoy some of the openers though.  Take a look at video of Tye Phoenix performing.  She’s dope, she said, and let it be heard: “The female emcee is back, the female rapper is dead!”
