Is Existence Prior to Esscence?

Existentialism

Today in English class we discussed an interesting philosophy relating to Invisible Man. This theory views human existence as “having a set of underlying themes and characteristics, such as anxiety, dread, freedom, awareness of death and consciousness of existing, that are primary.

“Existence is prior to essence,” is yet another aspect of this philosophy I found interesting. Human beings are in a sense thrown into existence. Human beings can only be understood from inside; “in terms of their lived and experienced reality, dilemmas and not from the outside in terms of biological, psychological, or other scientific theory of human nature.”

Essentially, we are created and thrown into the world before we even know who we are. Before we had any thoughts about life, or who we are or what we want to be, before we even know our own name, we are just here; existing. Thus, who we are today….is that original, or are we all pieces of our environment? Containing various thoughts, concepts, and traits of those we have seen and those around us?
