I’ve been told “No” more times than I’ve been told “Yes”. If I hear the word NO I simply say ‘I guess your not the person I should be talking to’ -Raven Symone

In the words of DJ Beverly Bond, founder of BGR, “Instead of being defined…we’re defining ourselves.”  Indeed that statement held true on the night of the Black Girls Rock awards show, which will be perhaps one of the best awards shows to air on BET.

I was lucky enough to get tickets at the last minute to attend the 5th annual Black Girls Rock event hosted by Nia Long on Saturday, October 16th at the Paradise Theater.  This year also marked the first year the awards will air on television.  It’s set to debut on BET on November 7th.

The awards served to honor not only successful women, but positive role models, that exist both in front of and behind the camera.  Among those honored included Missy Elliott, Ruby Dee, Raven Simone, Keke Palmer, Iyanla Vanzant and General Marcelite J Harris.  Even beyond those who were honored on stage that night, there were inspirational accomplished women sprinkled throughout the audience as well.

The performances truly served to set the mood of the evening with a fabulous line up including…
…Jill Scott, Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole, Ledisi, Marsha Ambrosius, Monica, Keri Hilson, VV Brown, Shontelle, Fantasia, Kelly Price and more.  The highlight of the evening was none other than the moment when Fantasia, Kelly Price, Jill Scott and Marsha Ambrosius all took to the stage with a rendition of “I’m Every Woman.”  That moment had everyone on their feet enveloped in the power that exists in being a woman.  One other unforgettable performance was the emotionally charged performance of “4 Women” sung by Jill Scott, Kelly Price, Ledisi and Marsha Ambrosius.

You can tune in to BET on November 7th to catch the broadcast of this powerful and inspirational night of black women celebrating each other.  But, beyond the awards show, Black Girls Rock is a movement and an organization.  You can find out more by visiting http://www.blackgirlsrockinc.com/.
