“The Sound of Young America”

Invites 10- to 18-year-olds to write essays on their American experience.
Blackpower.com is inviting youth aged 10 to 18 to share their ideas in a summer essay contest to be featured on their on-line magazine when it launches this Fall. Submissions will be judged by professional writers from the DC Metropolitan Area including journalists for the Washington Post and Black Entertainment Television (BET). Three winners will have their essays published on www.Blackpower.com in September, and receive a $100 award.

Teens and tweens, ages 10 to 18, are invited to answer one of the following four questions:
• What would you like the next American President to understand about your life, or the lives of people your age, when making decisions or taking actions that affect you?
• Describe what “Black Power” means to you?
• Do ethnic minorities face any additional challenges in the United States because of their race? Explain.
• What do you think its like to be Black in America?
Entries must be typed, double-spaced and between 500 – 750 words. Video essays also accepted. Entries must include the entrant’s name, age, grade, mailing address, telephone number, and email address (if applicable). Entries will not be returned and become property of Blackpower.com and may be used in a future issue.

feature articles by young writers re: news, politics, entertainment, race,
sexuality and additional issues impacting the community. Authors of the
